My Favorite Sand Hill Crane by Jerry Meyer

When my Grand, Great, Guru Grant wrote me about doing something for Easter, my first reaction was, "Hey, Christmas is fine because I spent ten years playing Santa Claus in a small Texas town." That left me with many funny stories, some of which you can find in the archives at Grant's Graceland. I've never worn an Easter Rabbit suit. This left my Writing Well feeling bereft and empty. I had absolutely no idea what to share with y'all. Yesterday, I was at one of our malls. When I left, I went down to a retainer pond to visit an old friend. As I drove Sparky back to Tonka 02, it dawned on me that the Lord had just given me a peek at Resurrection Day! Let's start with a little background, ok?

Many years ago, when the Whooping Crane was becoming extinct, someone had the bright idea of rescuing at least part of the Whooper by crossing the remaining Whooping Cranes with the Texas/Canadian Sand Hill Crane.

A few of the offspring ended up at a State Park near us. Over the years, they've grown and multiplied. These are, undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen. They have a distinguished triangular scarlet blaze across the top of their head.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a man photographing something in what I call the Dillard Pond. It's actually a retaining pond behind a department store. When I stopped, I saw a lovely Mama Sand Hill sitting on a nest. Right in the middle of lots of people and tons of traffic. The man is a professional photographer and was driving an hour each way every day to document the drama.

When Mama stood up, you could see several quite large brown speckled eggs. The hatching time for a crane is 28 to 32 days. The little chicks are due to break through their shells any day now. I go by and check regularly. What does all this have to do with Easter? New life! Those little baby birds are getting ready to enter into an entirely new existence.

Jesus told us that because He resurrected, we will also be resurrected! New life! Wow! What a trip! In the words of Anthony Campolo, "It's Friday, But Sunday's A Comin'!"

Jerry Meyer AKA PapaJ, past away June 21, 2005. Miss you bunches, Jerry!—Grant
